IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's and women's golf teams received the Big West Conference Spring Sportsmanship Team Award that was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The Sportsmanship Award is voted upon by the respective student-athletes in each of the Big West's 16 championship sports. Each participating student-athlete selects the school that demonstrates excellent conduct in competition and is most deserving of the award.
This is the second consecutive year the men's golf team has received the award, while this is the first time that women's golf was recognized for their sportsmanship on the course.
This year, the women's golf team won both the Rose City Collegiate team title and sophomore Rochelle Chan came away with her first career individual medalist. Three 49ers were named to the All-Big West team as senior Monica Villarreal, junior Simone Hoey and Chan were selected to the first team.
The men's golf team enjoyed an historic year as the 49ers won a record five tournament titles, two individual medalists, advanced to their first NCAA Tournament since 2004 and junior Philip Chian advancing to the NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. The 49ers also won two of the Big West's individual awards as Xander Schauffele was named freshman of the year and Mickey Yokoi was selected coach of the year, while Schauffele and senior Kevin Lim and Kevin Roy were named first team All-Big West.
