FIRST TEE
Long Beach State junior Philip Chian makes the short drive up the 405 freeway to Pacific Palisades for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at Riviera Country Club. Chian, one of six players playing as individuals at the NCAA Championship, will participate in the three-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament that begins on Tuesday, May 29. The Covina native is scheduled to tee of at 9 a.m. from the 10th tee on Tuesday and 2:20 p.m. from the 1st tee on Wednesday, May 30 for second round play. A total of 30 teams will be taking part in this year's NCAA Championship that features the first three days of stroke play competition and the top eight teams advancing onto the three-day match play to determine the national champion. CHIAN TIES FOR FOURTH PLACE AT NCAA ATHENS REGIONAL
Philip Chian was the top player for LBSU, recording a 54-hole score of 3-under-par 210 at the NCAA Athens Regional in Athens, Ga., tying for fourth place and finishing as the top individual scorer on a non-qualifying team to earn the regionals's lone individual berth to the NCAA Championship. Chian opened the regional carding an even-71, tying for 26th. In second round action, he improved by three strokes firing a 68 to place seventh. Chian would record another 71 in the final round to move up in the standings to tie for fourth with two other players from teams that would advance to the NCAA Championship.

CHIAN FIRST 49ER INDIVIUDAL TO ADVANCE TO NCAA FINALS
Junior Philip Chian is the first 49er in men's golf history to advance to the NCAA Championship as an individual since the regional format was introduced. Former 49er Ryan Wood (2003-07) was the last individual to participate in a regional since 2006, when he played at NCAA West Regional in Tucson, Ariz., tying for 99th at 7-over 223.

LBSU PLACES EIGHTH IN GEORGIA
Playing in their first NCAA Tournament since 2004, the 49ers made their third-ever appearance at the NCAA Regionals under the current format at the Athens Regional in Georgia. LBSU finished eighth with a 54-hole score of 20-over 872 as the 49ers shot round of 297, 281 and 294. Seniors Kevin Lim and Kevin Roy tied for 36th at 7-over 220, while freshman Xander Schauffele tied for 51st at 9-over 222 and junior Raymond Ho placed 74th (+22).

LBSU RECEIVES AT-LARGE BID INTO NCAA TOURNAMENT
Long Beach State received an at-large bid into the 2012 NCAA Tournament by virture of their high ranking in Golfstat and in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. This was the 49ers third-ever appearance in the NCAA regionals under the current format and first since 2004, when LBSU won the Big West Conference Championship and received the automatic berth. The 49ers made their first regional appearance back in 2000, when LBSU received an at-large berth into the west regional. Overall, this is LBSU's ninth appearance in postseason play as the 49ers participated in the NCAA Championship in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1982.
