PACIFIC PALISADES - Former Long Beach State men's golfer Paul Goydos was named as one of four assistant team captains for the 2010 United States Ryder Cup Team. Goydos will be joined by Davis Love III, Jeff Sluman and former captain Tom Lehman. The announcement was made by U.S. Team Captain Corey Pavin on Wednesday afternoon at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

This year's Ryder Cup will take place at The Celtic Manor Resort's Twenty Ten Course in Wales on Oct. 1-3. The U.S. will try to regain the Cup after its last victory in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. This year's team will attempt to become the first American team to win in Europe since 1993.

Goydos was a four-year letterwinner at LBSU (1981-85) under former long-time head coach Del Walker. In 1985, Goydos captured the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the former Serfas Country Club in Corona and was first team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association as he finished in fifth place at the PCAA championship.

A veteran of the PGA Tour for 18 seasons, Goydos won the Bay Hill Classic in 1996 and the Sony Open in 2007. In 2008, Goydos finished in second place at the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., after falling to eventual champion Sergio Garcia in a playoff.

"It's a great honor," said Goydos in a Ryder Cup statement. "The Ryder Cup is the face of our game. I think it is the starting point of our game and gets the most people excited. This is an honor to serve your game."

Goydos said that his call to serve from Pavin "has got to be one of the highlights of my career."
