Chian completes day one of NCAA Championship at Riviera
Junior golfer shoots a 74 to tie for 62nd place, second round continues on Wednesday

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Long Beach State junior Philip Chian shot a 3-over-par 74 to tie for 62nd place in the opening round of the NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.
Chian and 18 other players are tied for 62nd, including the world's No. 1 amateur Patrick Cantlay of UCLA.
Chian began the round on Tuesday morning at the par-4 10th tee, scoring seven consecutive pars until recording his first of two birdies at the par-5, 590-yard 17th hole. Chian would end the back-nine paring on the 18th and making the turn at 1-under.
Chian started the front making par on the 1st hole, but ran into trouble on the second and third holes as he double-bogeyed and bogeyed. He would go onto par holes four and five, before making two consecutive bogeys on six and seven. Chian carded his second birdie of the day at the par-4 8th as he closed out the round making par on the 9th.
UCLA's Anton Arboleda sits on top of the leaderboard of 156 players by one stroke with a 4-under 67. Alabama leads the field of 30 teams by three shots with a 1-over 285 over Florida and Auburn tied for second.
Second round play continues on Wednesday with Chian scheduled to tee off at 2:20 p.m. from the first tee with Albin Choi of North Carolina State and Jonathan De Los Reyes of Saint Mary's.
