49ers Closes Out Season in 5th at Big West Conference Championship

SAN JACINTO, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's golf team concluded the 2012-13 season finishing in fifth-place at the Big West Conference Championship at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.
The 49ers recorded a team high 13-over par 301 to finish with a three-day, 54-hole score of 30-over 894. LBSU finished just two shots behind UC Santa Barbara (+28) in fourth and four strokes behind UC Davis (+26) in third.
Cal State Fullerton and Pacific tied for first at 23-over and will share the team title. Both teams went onto a one-hole playoff to determine who would earn the Big West's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers won the playoff over the Titans by two strokes.
Senior Philip Chian led the way for the 49ers, tying for eighth at 5-over 221. Chian carded a final round 75 that was highlighted by five bogeys and one birdie on the front-nine and two bogeys and three birdies on the back.
Freshman Daniel Chian tied for 11th after shooting a 75 to finish at 6-over, while sophomore JJ Holen carded a 75 to tie for 17th at 9-over. Freshman Kevin Lee tied for 20th after posting a 76 to finish at 10-over.
Senior Raymond Ho turned in his best round of the tournament with a 76 to move up in the standings by three positions to tie for 42nd at 21-over.
A three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard between Cal State Fullerton's Corey Gard, who remained in the top spot throughout the tournament, Pacific's Eric Sugimoto and UC Santa Barbara's Brett Silvernail, who erased an eight-stroke deficit after firing a 3-under-par 69. All three players blasted a 1-over 217 to claim the top spot. Sugimoto won a two-hole playoff to capture the individual medalist honor.
