On May 2, 2008, LBSU Director of Athletics Vic Cegles announced that Poutre had been selected the new men's golf coach for the 49ers. Poutre spent four years (2004-08) as the Head Men's Golf Coach at the University of Hartford. Poutre has turned Hartford into one of the strongest programs on the east coast. During his four year reign at Hartford, the team's national ranking improved by nearly 120 spots. The Hawks won three regular season tournaments, two conference championships and advanced to the 2007 NCAA Division-I East Regionals. Poutre refers to Roy as the best unknown talent in the northeast.

Poutre is looking forward to elevating the status of the Del Walker Invitational. At Hartford, he was able to establish, coordinate and host the schools first home event in 18 years. Within three years, the Hartford Hawks Invitational developed into the premier college event in the northeast attracting a very strong national field.

Over the past several years, Poutre has taken the time to travel the country as the lead educator for the NCAA sponsored "Playbook For Life" program. The program was developed by The Hartford to teach NCAA student-athletes the basics of personal finance. Poutre has spoken at more than 20 campuses across the country.

From 2000-2004, Poutre was the Chief Executive Officer for Prime Financial, Inc after serving as the Executive Vice President of Business Development for the previous four years. In 2003, he was honored as a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
