Former Men’s Golfer Philip Chian has been hired by Michael Wilson to serve as the program’s lead assistant coach.
“I’m really excited to welcome Philip Chian back home to the Long Beach Men’s Golf team,” said Wilson. “His experience as player, his passion for the game of golf and his ties to the Beach make him a great fit. I’m confident that Philip’s work ethic and competitive drive will help drive recruiting and the development of our players going forward.”
Chian was a four-year letterwinner with the program, with his best season coming in 2012. Leading Long Beach State to a second-place finish at the Big West Championships, the team went on to compete at the NCAA Athens Regional, where Chian had one of the best tournaments of his career, carding a 3-under 210 including a second round 68 to finish in a tie for fourth place.
That finish allowed him to be one of six golfers to qualify as an individual for the NCAA Championship, becoming the most recent Long Beach State Men’s Golfer to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Chian was also twice the team’s top finisher at the Big West Championship in both 2012 and 2013.
Following his graduation from Long Beach State in 2013, Chian went on to play professionally for three years before taking a position as the assistant pro at Canyon Crest Country Club in Riverside, Calif.
“Ever since I stepped foot on campus, I fell in love with both the school and the golf program, and so I’m thrilled to be back at Long Beach State,” said Chian. “I really like where the program is headed under Michael Wilson, and I feel like my experiences as a golfer and as a student-athlete will help the program grow.”
