Junior Mike Caffey was selected as a Preseason All-Big West honoree.

Oct. 24, 2013

Long Beach, Calif. - Junior guard Mike Caffey was one of six players recognized on the Big West Preseason Media All-Conference Team, announced today by the conference office. Caffey, a first-team All-Big West selection a year ago, leads the 49ers in their attempt to win a fourth consecutive regular-season Big West championship.

Caffey averaged 12 points and 3.8 assists per game a season ago, and has helped Long Beach State post a 26-game home winning streak in conference games inside the Walter Pyramid.

Caffey was joined on the preseason team by Will Davis II of UC Irvine, Chris Eversley of Cal Poly, Corey Hawkings of UC Davis, Christian Standhardinger of Hawai'i, and Alan Williams of UC Santa Barbara.

Despite the return of Caffey and Dan Jennings from the returning champions, the 49ers were not picked to defend their title in 2013-14 in the Preseason Media Poll, also announced today. Long Beach State received five first place votes, but was placed in fourth place by the media prior to the beginning of the season.

With nine first place votes, UC Irvine was picked to finish in first with 183 points, while UC Santa Barbara (6 first-place votes), Cal Poly (3 first-place votes), and Long Beach State were picked in a pack behind them in that order, with UCSB finishing with 167 points, Cal Poly with 165, and the 49ers just behind the pair with 164 points.

In the middle stood UC Davis with 114 points, while Hawai'i was picked to finish in sixth place with 110 points. Rounding out the list, Cal State Northridge was picked to finish in seventh, while Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside brought up the rear.

Long Beach State opens up the 2013-14 campaign on Saturday, November 9, hosting Hawaii Pacific in the Walter Pyramid at 3 p.m.
