Casper Ware To Join Philadelphia 76ers
March 24, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - The Philadelphia 76ers announced Monday that former Long Beach State standout Casper Ware has been signed to a 10-day contract with the team, allowing the guard to join the roster immediately.
Ware had been playing overseas in the top level of professional Italian basketball, Serie A, with Virtus Bologna.
A phenomenal player for the 49ers, Ware was a two-time Big West Player of the Year, leading Long Beach State to the NCAA Tournament as a senior as well as two consecutive regular-season Big West crowns. Ware departed Long Beach State as the program's all-time assists leader with 545, and scored 1,841 points during his career, trailing only Lucious Harris and Michael Wiley, two players that also went on to play in the NBA.
Ware's signing gives The Beach its first player on an NBA roster since Bryon Russell retired in the course of the 2005-06 season, after 841 games in the NBA, primarily with the Utah Jazz. Ware's LBSU teammate, James Ennis, became the first 49er picked in the NBA draft since 1998 in 2013, but has spent this season starring for the Perth Wildcats in Australia, leading the team to the best record in the league while averaging 22.3 points per game.
