No. 7 Seed LBSU to Face No. 2 Seed Baylor in 1st Round of NIT
March 17, 2013
The Long Beach State men's basketball team (19-13) will head to Waco, Texas on Wednesday, Mar. 20 to take on Baylor (18-12) in the first round of the NIT at 6:00 pm (PT). LBSU is a No. 7 seed, while Baylor is a No. 2 seed. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
Long Beach has faced Baylor four times in its history, with the series tied 2-2. The 49ers last faced the Bears in 1979, which was a loss for LBSU (80-87).
Also in the 49ers bracket are No. 1 seed Kentucky, the reigning NCAA Champion, and Pac-12 team Arizona State. If the 49ers defeat Baylor, they will face the winner of the ASU/Detroit game.
LBSU's Bracket Breakdown
Long Beach is in a postseason tournament for the third consecutive season, a feat no 49er team has done since LBSU sent teams to four straight NCAA Tournaments from 1970-73. They are the only Big West representative in the NIT. Long Beach is 2-6 all-time in the NIT, most recently having lost to Washington State in 2011.
"This gives us a second chance," said Dan Monson. "Everyone in the NIT had dreams of playing in the NCAA tournament, but just weren't consistent enough to get in, so this gives us a second chance.
"Baylor is a solid team, with one of the top big men in the country in Isaiah Austin. We know they have good players and are a national-caliber program. It's going to be a tough game, but as a competitor, our guys have to step up and focus on this opportunity to go out and continue our season. Hopefully our team will have that mindset on Wednesday."
The semifinals and final game will be held at Madison Square Garden.
