Caffey Garners Big West Player of the Week Honors
Jan. 14, 2013
Solid contributions in all areas, including a game-winning jumper, propelled Long Beach State sophomore Mike Caffey to the Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week award.
The 6-0 guard averaged 16.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals to aid LBSU's ascension into first place in the Big West as the 49ers dispatched of Cal State Northridge (78-69) and Hawai'i (76-72).
Caffey's floater with just over one second to play lifted the 49ers to the win in the tightly contested battle with the Rainbow Warriors, who entered the game tied for first place in the standings. The jumper gave Caffey 18 points to go along with a solid line of four rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Three nights earlier, Caffey made 7 of 9 floor shots en route to 14 points against the Matadors. He dished out a pair of assists and made four steals.
For the week, Caffey shot 54.5 (12 of 22) percent from the field. He has now scored in double figures in five consecutive games.
Others nominated: Sammy Yeager (Cal State Fullerton); Corey Hawkins (UC Davis); Will Davis II (UC Irvine); Alan Williams (UC Santa Barbara); Tony Gill (Pacific).
