Nacogdoches, Texas - Texas native Branford Jones had a solid return to his home state, scoring 15 points, but that was one of few bright spots for the 49ers as Long Beach State opened a six-game road swing with a 74-45 loss on the road at Stephen F. Austin.

David Samuels was close to a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, but besides the senior and Jones, Long Beach State had trouble scoring points, despite shooting 43.2 percent from the field. The Beach went 0-for-8 from three, and were out-rebounded 36 to 19, including giving up 18 offensive rebounds to Stephen F. Austin.

The rebounding discrepancy, along with 19 LBSU turnovers, led to what would end up as the 49ers' largest defeat of the year.

That all came despite the Beach holding close in the first half after a rough start. Jones had the only points for Long Beach State over the first 10 minutes, but the 49er defense held strong against SFA. Combining defensive stops and steals the 49ers within nine points of the Lumberjacks when Long Beach State finally picked up its second basket at the 9:59 mark, and a jumper by Branford Jones would cut the SFA lead to six with 3:21 left in the first half.

Long Beach State got the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to six once more, but an 8-0 run by the Lumberjacks quickly switched the momentum back in favor of Stephen F. Austin. Trailing by 18 with eight minutes to play, a five-minute dry spell ended any hope of a comeback for the 49ers.

Thomas Walkup and Jared Johnson each had 16 points for the Lumberjacks, while Walkup added nine rebounds. Long Beach State's Mike Caffey was held to eight points, ending a 13-game streak of scoring in double-figures for the senior. Early foul trouble limited Tyler Lamb, who finished with four points.

Long Beach State is back in action on Wednesday, December 10, staying on the road and playing at San Diego State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
