Cincinnati, Ohio - Long Beach State shot 54.7 percent from the floor Tuesday, but were undone at the other end as the 49ers dropped another high-scoring road affair at Xavier, 97-74. Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 20 points, while Tyler Lamb added 17 in his return to the starting lineup.

Xavier started the contest on a great run, making their first four shots and taking a 10-3 early lead. The Beach was able to fight back on the strength of 11 early points from Mike Caffey, and after eight minutes Long Beach State had tied the score at 17 after Temidayo Yussuf scored down in the paint.

Yussuf scored again to tie the game a second time at 19-19, but a 3-pointer from James Farr kept Xavier in front, and the Musketeers would eventually take an eight-point lead at 33-25 as the torrid pace continued. The 49ers cut the lead to four at 33-29 with six minutes in the half, but turnovers would lead to easy baskets over the closing minutes of the half and Xavier held a 51-38 edge going into the break.

Despite the 49ers shooting an unworldly 70.8% in the first half (17-for-24), nine first-half turnovers helped the Muskateers into the 13-point lead, along with 12 first-half points from Myles Davis.

The second-half continued along the same lines, as the 49ers continued to shoot well, but could not keep pace with Xavier, who finished just behind the 49ers on 53% shooting (35-of-66), helped mainly by unselfish play with 24 assists and 19 second chance points.

The Beach was able to pull within single digits in the second half, cutting the lead to 71-62 with just over 11 minutes remaining. Putting together their best defensive stretch of the game, the 49ers held Xavier without a score for the better part of two minutes while keeping their offensive pace up. A three by scorer J.P. Macura would extend the lead back into double-digits, and Xavier would extend their cushion down the stretch leading to the final score. Five Xavier players finished the game in double-figures, led by Trevon Bluiett who had 20, tying Caffey for the game high.

Long Beach State is back in action, returning to the Walter Pyramid to host Big 12 opponent Kansas State. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the game being televised live on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
