49ers fall short against No. 11 North Carolina 78-63
Nov. 16, 2012
Long Beach, Calif. - In front of 6,912 fans, shattering the previous Walter Pyramid attendance record, the 49ers trailed by one at the half and held a second-half lead, but ultimately Long Beach State fell to the No. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels 78-63 on Friday Night.
The loss snapped a 23-game home winning streak for Long Beach State (1-2), tied for the second-longest in the nation with Kansas and trailing only Kentucky. Senior James Ennis led the 49ers with 18 points, while sophomore Mike Caffey added 14 and junior Dan Jennings was one-point shy of a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
North Carolina (3-0) grabbed the early lead, but a Dan Jennings putback dunk tied the game at 9-9 and got the crowd involved in an exciting first half. Tied 15-15 through eight minutes, a free throw from Kyle Richardson gave Long Beach State its first lead at 16-15 with 11:35 to play.
A 3-pointer from Mike Caffey gave the 49ers a 22-19 lead, and another three from Peter Pappageorge put LBSU on top 29-25 with five minutes to play. A Caffey jumper gave 49ers a six-point lead, their largest of the game, with 2:15 to play, but second-chance points hurt the 49ers down the stretch, and the Tar Heels erased the 49er lead to take a 33-32 lead behind 15 first-half offensive rebounds.
North Carolina started the second half with an early run, but a goaltending call on Desmond Hubert kicked off a rally for the 49ers, the first pair of a 7-0 run that gave the 49ers a 41-39 lead on a jumper from Jennings with 16:23 to play.
After the 16-minute mark, the Tar Heels made the lion's share of their seven second-half three pointers in a 20-4 run, opening up a 59-45 lead with 11:55 to play. A three-point play by Ennis cut the UNC lead to 10 at 68-58 with 5:40 left in the game, but the 49ers would come no closer in the loss.
Friday night's attendance broke the old record for the Walter Pyramid of 5,649, set last season against Cal State Fullerton. The 49ers will now play three straight on the road, starting with a trip to No. 12 Arizona on Monday, November 19.
