Jennings Records Fourth Consecutive Double-Double In Senior Night Victory
March 8, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Senior Dan Jennings finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds, his fourth straight double-double in his final game in the Walter Pyramid, helping lead Long Beach State to a 74-67 win over UC Riverside.
Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 13 points, while Tyler Lamb added 11 for the players in double-figures. Travis Hammonds and A.J. Spencer each added nine, while Branford Jones scored eight points, part of a balanced effort for Long Beach State (14-16, 10-6 Big West).
The Beach controlled the action throughout, never trailing against UC Riverside (10-20, 5-11 Big West) in the final home game of the regular season. A 3-pointer from Hammonds put the 49ers up 17-11 with 10:51 to play, and that cushion held for the rest of the half. Christian Griggs-Williams converted a three-point play in the closing seconds to give the 49ers a 34-22 lead, as Long Beach State held UCR to 25 percent shooting in the first.
The second half led to more of the same, as Long Beach State would eventually lead by as much as 20 points with 3:14 to play, up 72-52 following a three-point play on a circus finish from Spencer. With both teams subbing out the starters, UC Riverside made a push against the 49er bench, but Long Beach State was able to hold off the Highlanders with free throws from Anson Moye and Javion Watson, closing out the game 74-67.
The 49ers shot over 50 percent, making 28-of-55 shots, while outrebounding the Highlanders by eight and finishing with 15 assists. Following the game, Long Beach State honored its two seniors, Jennings and Edgar Garibay.
Long Beach State is locked in as the No. 3 seed, and will play at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament. All seven games of the men's tournament will be played at the Honda Center.
