March 1, 2014
Fullerton, Calif. - Despite a strong start on the road at Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State was unable to keep pace with the Titans in an up-tempo affair on the road, falling 84-76 in Titan Gym. Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 22 points, while Dan Jennings finished with his second straight double-double in the loss.
Long Beach State (13-15, 9-5 Big West) started off very well, opening up the game on a 19-5 run over the first seven-plus minutes, but Cal State Fullerton (11-17, 6-8) hung around, and had cut the LBSU lead to just three points at 38-35 on a bucket at the buzzer by Marquis Horne, who finished with 18 points.
In the second half, Titans guards Michael Williams and Alex Harris took over, with Williams finishing with 28 points and Harris ending with 22 as Cal State Fullerton stole the momentum from the 49ers.
Capitalizing on nine second-half turnovers by The Beach, Cal State Fullerton scored 15 points on five straight 3-pointers to open up a 60-54 lead with just over 10 minutes to play. The Titans were able to increase their lead to as many as 15 points, and only with late pressure were the 49ers to cut the lead under double-figures.
The 49ers missed the presence of Travis Hammonds, who missed the game with concussion symptoms following a collision Thursday against Hawaii.
Cal State Fullerton offset a huge 45-27 difference on the boards, led by Jennings and Spencer who each finished with 10 rebounds, with scorching 43.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc including shooting 6-of-11 in the second half.
Long Beach State remains on the road to start the final week of the regular season, traveling to Cal State Northridge Thursday before closing out at home against UC Riverside on Saturday, March 8.
