Long Beach, Calif. - Mike Caffey scored a game-high 20 points and David Samuels picked up a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Beach led nearly the full 40 minutes in a 68-63 win over UC Riverside Thursday night in the Walter Pyramid. McKay LaSalle pitched in 13 points for the 49ers in the win.

Long Beach State (13-11, 7-1 Big West) opened the game on a 10-3 run, and led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but UC Riverside (10-12, 3-5 Big West) refused to go away, eventually taking a 25-24 lead on a Robert Boezeman layup.

Caffey, who finished the first half with 11 points, put the 49ers back on top by three at the half on a late layup.

In the second, the Beach started out on fire, and this time, never looked back. Quick buckets from Lamb and McKnight got the half started, and then a 3-pointer from LaSalle pushed the 49er lead back up to ten, forcing a timeout from Dennis Cutts just over a minute into the half.

A 3-pointer from Travis Hammonds pushed the lead out to 16 points, and that would hold as a third long-distance make from LaSalle on the day put the 49ers on top 63-51 with 1:11 to play.

The Highlanders scrambled to catch up, but four free throws from LaSalle in the closing seconds put the lead up to nine with 16 seconds to play. UCR scored two quick baskets in the final seconds, but the gap was too big to overcome.

David Samuels fourth double-double of the season, and his third in the last five games for the 49ers, and LaSalle finished in double figures for the fourth time this year.

For the senior Caffey, his 20-point performance pushed him to 6th all-time in scoring at Long Beach State, now with 1,542 points, passing Ramel Lloyd and Larry Anderson.

Long Beach State closes out this current homestand by hosting UC Irvine in the Walter Pyramid on Saturday. The Black and Blue Rivalry game is set to tip off at 4 p.m., and will be shown live on ESPN3.
