Long Beach State Rolls Past Cal State Fullerton 75-56
Feb. 1, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Junior guard Mike Caffey finished with one of his most well-rounded efforts of the season, nearing a triple double with 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists as Long Beach State prevailed 75-56 against Cal State Fullerton. Long Beach State never trailed against the Titans in the team's return to the Walter Pyramid.
Caffey steered a commanding effort on short rest for Long Beach State (9-12, 5-2 Big West), as the 49ers took the floor less than 24 hours after returning from Hawai'i after a win over the Rainbow Warriors. Nevertheless, it was The Beach that took command early, with Caffey getting the 49ers on the board to start a 12-3 run out of the gate.
Cal State Fullerton (7-13, 2-4 Big West) was able to tie the game at 12-12 with a 3-pointer from Alex Harris with 11:23 left in the first half, but Caffey answered on the next trip down, and Long Beach State led the rest of the way.
Finishing a 7-0 run with a Dan Jennings 3-point play, Long Beach State would take a double-digit lead with 5:42 in the first. An alley oop dunk by Jennings from Caffey sent the near-sellout crowd to their feet and extended the 49er lead to 13 points on the way to the half, where LBSU led by 12.
Both teams continued to grind through the second half, but the 49ers were never truly threatened, never allowing the lead under 10 points on the way to the victory.
Tyler Lamb added 18 points for Long Beach State, and as a team the 49ers shot over 55% for the second straight game, while also winning the rebounding battle 43-37.
With the win, the 49ers remain on pace at the top of the league standings. Long Beach State heads back on the road next weekend, starting with a rematch in the Black and Blue Rivalry at UC Irvine on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
