FULLERTON, Calif. - Casper Ware scored a career-high 27 points to lead four Long Beach State players in double figures but it wasn't enough as Cal State Fullerton snapped the 49ers' six-game winning streak 89-87 in Titan Gym on Wednesday.
Ware made 8-of-15 shots, including 4-of-10 from three, while hitting 7-of-8 free throws. He added four assists for Long Beach State (11-9, 6-1 Big West). Greg Plater added 19 points, while Larry Anderson chipped in 18 points, five assists and five rebounds. T.J. Robinson added 17 points and 10 rebounds as the four Niners combined to score 81 of LBSU's 87 points.
Plater hit 6-of-12 shots, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Anderson connected on 7-of-13 shots and Robinson was good on 8-of-14 as the 49ers made 52.5 percent (32-of-61) of their shots. Defensively the 49ers struggled allowing the Titans (7-12, 3-4 Big West) to convert on 51.7 percent (31-of-60) of their shots. CSF made nine more free throws, turned the ball over five less times and out-rebounded LBSU 36-32. The Titans made 56.3 percent of their shots in the second half, while Long Beach converted on 62 percent.
Jer'Vaugn Johnson led five Titans in double figures with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
The teams traded buckets through the first media timeout but then Cal State Fullerton went on a 10-0 run to build a 14-6 lead with just under seven minutes gone in the game.
The 49ers battled back cutting the lead to three on a conventional three-point play by Ware and a basket by Eugene Phelps, but the Titans answered with eight of the next 10 points to build their biggest lead of the half, 21-13.
Plater and Ware sparked a 49er run with back to back 3-pointers to cut the CSF lead to 21-19 and then Robinson tied it with a basket.
After a 3-point play by Johnson gave the Titans the lead back, Long Beach State scored the next six points on baskets by Plater, Ware and Kyle Richardson. Johnson answered for Cal State Fullerton to cut the lead to one, but Ware canned a three to give The Beach a four-point lead, 30-26.
CSF outscored LBSU 9-3 in the final two minutes to take a 35-33 lead into the locker room. Ware led Long Beach State with 11 first half points, while Plater added eight and Robinson six. Johnson paced CSF with 14 points and seven boards.
The Titans outshot LBSU 46.4 percent to 43.8 percent and made seven more free throws in the half. Long Beach State was 4-of-11 from three, while the Titans were just 1-of-3. The 49ers committed five more turnovers than the Titans and won the rebounding battle 21-17.
Plater canned his first of three second-half 3-pointers to put Long Beach State up one 30 seconds into the second half, but Orane Chin answered to put Fullerton back on top.
After a basket by Ware gave LBSU the lead with 18:43 to play, Andre Hardy answered for the Titans to put CSF back on top 39-38. The Titans extended the lead to as many as 10 later in the half and Long Beach State never led again despite 16 second-half points from both Ware and Anderson and 11 from both Robinson and Plater.
Hardy scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half. Devon Peltier had 11 of his 18 after the break, including eight in the first 6:06 of the second half.
Long Beach State returns to Big West action Saturday when the 49ers visit UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
