Long Beach, Calif. - Right-handed pitcher Brett Lorin was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2011 MLB Rule 5 draft, conducted Thursday at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Dallas.

The Rule 5 draft, named after the applicable provision in the MLB Rulebook, allows teams to select a player from outside of another team's 40-man roster, provided that the picking team will keep said player on the team's official 25-man major league roster for the period of one season.

With his selection, Lorin moves from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He finished the 2011 season with the Pirates' Single-A affiliate in the Florida State League, the Bradenton Mauraders, posting a 2.84 ERA with 99 strikeouts.

Notable recent Rule 5 selections include Josh Hamilton, Johan Santana, Jayson Werth, and Dan Uggla.

Lorin spent one season with the Dirtbags, posting a 5-3 record with a 2.61 ERA in 2008 with Long Beach State, helping the 2008 team to a Top 5 ranking and hosting the 2008 NCAA Regional at Blair Field. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.

Since Lorin was picked in the Rule 5 draft, he will be on the opening day roster for the Arizona Diamondbacks unless he is waived or placed on the Disabled List. Players selected in the Rule 5 draft may not be sent to the minors for a full season after the draft.
