Brock Lundquist Drafted In 6th Round by Toronto Blue Jays
Lundquist was the second Dirtbags player off the board on Day 2 of the 2017 MLB Draft, following David Banuelos in Round 5.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior outfielder Brock Lundquist was a 6th Round pick in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday, going to the Toronto Blue Jays with the 189th overall selection. Lundquist was the second Dirtbags player drafted on Day 2 of the draft, following David Banuelos in the 5th Round.
This is the second time Lundquist has been drafted, after the Oakland Athletics used a 36th Round pick on him out of Fountain Valley High School in the 2014 MLB Draft.
Lundquist was a three-time All-Big West performer at Long Beach State, playing three different positions in his three years at the Beach. He was a Freshman All-American as a designated hitter for the Dirtbags in 2015, then served as LBSU's primary left fielder in 2016 and was the everyday right fielder for LBSU this past season. He is one of just 15 players in Long Beach State history to earn All-Conference recognition three times, joining names like Jason Giambi, Bobby Crosby, Troy Tulowitzki, Danny Espinosa and Garrett Hampson.
Lundquist hit .277 this season, tying for the team lead with five triples and 13 doubles while adding four home runs. He was also second on the team with 10 stolen bases in just 13 attempts. Thanks to a team-best 32 walks, Lundquist led the Dirtbags with a .388 on-base percentage in 2017.
A native of nearby Fountain Valley, Calif., Lundquist has been a consistent presence in the Dirtbags lineup for the past three years, playing in 164 games with 152 starts. He is sixth on LBSU's all-time doubles list with 45 two-baggers in his career. Lundquist is a .294 career hitter at the Beach with 10 home runs and 81 RBIs.
The last Dirtbags player to be drafted by the Blue Jays was Jonathan Jones, a 29th Round selection in the 2010 draft. With Banuelos and Lundquist off the board, there are still a handful of other Dirtbags with expected draft consideration. Day 2 runs through Round 10 with Rounds 11-40 scheduled for Day 3 of the draft on Wednesday.
