McNeil, Four Other Dirtbags Garner All-Big West Recognition
May 28, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Junior Jeff McNeil was chosen as the First-Team All-Big West Utility Player as announced by the Big West Conference on Tuesday, highlighting five Dirtbags selected for recognition by the league's coaches. Richard Prigatano and Ino Patron each were on the second team, while Juan Avila and Ty Provencher received Honorable Mention.
McNeil started every game for the Dirtbags during the 2013 season and led the team with a .348 batting average and 16 doubles while striking out just 11 times in 221 at-bats. In conference play, McNeil split his time amongst four different positions, and excelled at all four to earn the top honors for any Utility player.
The Dirtbags also had two players chosen for the second team. Junior Ino Patron was picked for the DH position after hitting .343 with nine doubles and three triples during Big West play, and .301 overall during the 2013 campaign. Despite missing the final 12 games of the season, sophomore Richard Prigatano also garnered second team consideration, earning the honor after hitting .302 overall, slugging .415 and hitting .345 in Big West play, enough to be chosen as one of three second-team outfielders.
Senior Juan Avila earned Honorable Mention for the second straight season, hitting .301 in Big West play with two home runs and starting all 27 games at third base. He was joined as an honorable mention by freshman hurler Ty Provencher, who earned the honor as a middle reliever after making 12 appearances in Big West play, finishing with a 1.69 ERA, and closing the season with a 2.33 ERA overall over 27 innings pitched.
The All-Big West teams are selected following voting by the Big West's 10 member coaches.
