David Banuelos Named Semifinalist for Johnny Bench Award
Junior David Banuelos is one of 15 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given each year to the nation’s top catcher.
WICHITA, Kan. - Long Beach State catcher David Banuelos has been named a semifinalist for the 2017 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com. The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced the 15 semifinalists for the award, given to the nation’s top collegiate catcher each year since the award’s creation in 2000.
Banuelos was a first team All-Big West performer as a sophomore last season and has been even better this season for the Dirtbags. He is currently batting .321 with a .388 on-base percentage, and is second on the team in home runs (7) and slugging (.538). Defensively, Banuelos has thrown out 17 of the 27 attempted base-stealers he’s faced.
The three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, selected by a national voting panel, will be announced on June 5. The national committee will conduct a final vote during the College World Series to determine the winner, which will be announced at the 20th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 29.
