Lucas Tancas Earns Second Big West Weekly Award
The junior INF/OF earned his second Big West Athlete of the Week honor of the season after hitting .563 in four wins last week.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - For the second time in the last four weeks, Lucas Tancas was the best offensive player in the Big West Conference, earning Big West Field Athlete of the Week on Monday. Tancas led the Dirtbags to a perfect 4-0 week, with a Tuesday win over USC and a weekend sweep of UC Riverside.
The junior INF/OF hit .563 in those four games, with two home runs, two doubles, six runs scored and five runs batted in. He hit solo home runs in the final two games of the UCR series, taking over the team lead with five homers on the season. He is also the team’s leading hitter with a .364 batting average and a .586 slugging percentage.
Tancas was a big part of LBSU’s eight-run second inning in Saturday’s win over Riverside. He started that inning with a solo home run, then delivered a two-run double later in the rally to collect three RBIs and six total bases in the frame.
This gives Long Beach State three of the last four winners of the Big West Field Athlete of the Week award, as Tancas won on Mar. 20 and Brock Lundquist won it last week. Tancas becomes the first Dirtbags player to win the award multiple times in a season since Shane Peterson in 2008. He is also just the 10th player in Long Beach State history to win this award multiple times in his career.
LBSU is currently on a six-game winning streak and will host CSUN for a weekend series at Blair Field this coming Thursday-Saturday.
