Long Beach, Calif. - As part of last weekend's festivities against Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State welcomed back its most successful program in school history, the 1993 College World Series team that ended the year ranked No. 3 in the nation.
More than 15 members of the team were in attendance, along with assistant coaches Jim Yogi, Mike Weathers, and head coach Dave Snow, all of whom returned for the reunion and were recognized prior to the game.
The Big West Champions in 1993, first-team All-Big West selections Daniel Choi, Cobi Cradle, Mike Fontana and Gabe Gonzalez led the Dirtbags all the way to Omaha, going 4-0 in the East Tallahasse regional behind Regional MVP John Swanson.
After losing their first game in Omaha against LSU, the Dirtbags rallied to defeat Kansas and Texas A&M before scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Tigers in a rematch against LMU, winning 10-8 and forcing a rematch against LSU for the right to advance to the national finals, losing by one run in the rubber game 6-5.
Among the player returning last Saturday were Cradle, Fontana and Swanson, as well as former major leaguers Gonzalez and Jeff Liefer.
