Long Beach, Calif. - Junior Andrew Gagnon has been selected as the Big West Pitcher of the Week, having won the award two of the last three weeks. Gagnon threw 8.0 innings against No. 18 Rice and earned the win in a 2-1 victory over the Owls.
Gagnon, who also won the award two weeks ago for his performance against Arizona, was outstanding once again last Friday against Rice. Gagnon struck out six Owls and walked one, scattering six hits and allowing just one run over 8.0 innings as Long Beach State defeated Rice by a 2-1 margin.
A junior from Brentwood, Calif., Gagnon has now faced four ranked opponents in four starts, lowering his ERA to 1.30 on the season with four runs allowed against Cal State Fullerton, Arizona, Oregon and now Rice.
Gagnon's win was the second in four BWC Pitcher of the Week awards handed out this season, and marked the third time in a row that Long Beach State's pitchers had earned the award in 2011, as Shawn Stuart was the recipient last week.
With his second Pitcher of the Week award, Gagnon becomes the 16th pitcher in Long Beach State history to be a two-time winner.
