Zak Baayoun Named Big West Pitcher of the Week

Feb. 19, 2018

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Dirtbags opened the 2018 season with a 4-1 victory over Saint Mary’s on Friday night, led by sophomore starting pitcher Zak Baayoun. The lefthander was making his first career start, but looked dominant in seven innings of work, striking out 12 batters while allowing just one run in the victory. That performance led to Baayoun receiving Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career.

The only blemish on his start was a second-inning solo home run, but Baayoun was dominant after that, putting up five consecutive zeroes on the scoreboard to allow the Dirtbags offense to come back and win the game. The 12 strikeouts for Baayoun are the most for a Dirtbags pitcher in a season opener for at least 20 years, and LBSU’s 17 strikeouts as a team were the most in nearly a decade.

This is the first weekly award of Baayoun’s career. Last season, Long Beach State had two Big West Pitchers of the Week: All-Americans Darren McCaughan and Dave Smith.

The Dirtbags will be back in action on Tuesday night at Blair Field, hosting USC at 6 p.m.
