Chris Rivera Named NCBWA Preseason All-American
Junior closer Chris Rivera was named a Preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), earning a spot on the third team.
DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its list of Preseason All-Americans on Monday, and Long Beach State junior reliever Chris Rivera earned a spot on the third team. Long Beach State's closer has been an anchor in the Dirtbags bullpen in his first two years on campus, recording 13 saves in each season.
In 2017, Rivera made 26 relief appearances and recorded a 2.60 ERA, striking out an impressive 47 batters in 34.2 innings pitched. His 13 saves tied for 17th in the nation last year, and also moved him into a tie for second place on LBSU's all-time saves list. No Dirtbags pitcher has recorded more saves in his first two seasons than Rivera, who sits 20 saves back of LBSU's all-time leader, Gabe Gonzalez, with 46.
This is the third straight year that the Dirtbags have boasted a Preseason All-American, as both Chris Mathewson and Garrett Hampson were tabbed before the 2016 season and Darren McCaughan was recognized prior to last season.
The 2018 Dirtbags season begins on Feb. 16 as Long Beach State hosts Saint Mary's for a three-game series.
