Long Beach, Calif. - Top-seed and host Long Beach State staved off elimination by exploding for 13 hits in a 9-2 loser's bracket win over the third-seeded California Golden Bears Saturday in Long Beach in the NCAA College Baseball Long Beach Regional.

Brett Lorin, in only his second weekend start, improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 on the weekends by tossing five strong innings, striking out five and giving up only a two-run home run to right fielder Blake Smith in the fourth inning to get the win for the 49ers.

Long Beach State (38-20) also brought the lumber as four hitters had multi-hit games led by catcher Travis Howell who was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Cal starter Craig Bennigson (4-5) lasted just three innings giving up a pair of runs before LBSU rallied for five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to break the game open.

Former Golden Bear Jason Corder proved to be the big thorn in the Cal's (33-21-2) side knocking in three runs which included a two-run double with the bases loaded in eighth.

The 49er bullpen did the rest allowing just a hit batter in four hitless innings of relief.

Long Beach State continues in the loser's bracket tomorrow at 1 pm facing the loser of tonight's winner's bracket game between second-seeded San Diego and fourth-seeded Fresno State.
