May 30, 2008
Long Beach, Calif. - Lefty Justin Wilson baffled top-seeded Long Beach State striking out 11 in seven innings as the fourth-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs upset the 11th-ranked 49ers 7-3 in the opening round of the NCAA College World Series Long Beach Regional Friday night in Long Beach.
Wilson's first six outs were via the strikeout and despite hitting and walking a pair, he stranded seven 49ers (37-20) and retired six of the seven leadoff men to improve to 7-4 on the year.
Second-team All-American Andrew Liebel didn't fair as well for the 49ers as he gave up all seven runs, the most of his career in any outing, in 7.2 innings of work to fall to 8-4.
Fresno State (38-27) blew open a close game with three runs in the top of the eighth inning using RBI hits from right fielder Steve Detwiler and designated hitter Jordan Ribera to go with a sac fly from center fielder Trent Soares to give the Bulldogs a five-run lead they would never relinquish.
Long Beach State, who now drops to the loser's bracket to face the California Golden Bears Saturday at 2 pm in an elimination game, closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the third when third baseman Brandon Godfrey singled in a pair of runs with the bases loaded after he was called back from leaning into a pitch that hit him.
The Bulldogs got on the board first with in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs as left fielder Steve Susdorf scored on a double by first baseman Alan Ahmady and third baseman Tommy Mendonca roped a single up the middle to score Ahmady.
Fresno State moves into the winner's bracket to face the second-seeded San Diego Toreros at 6 pm Saturday. San Diego blanked Cal 5-0 in game one of the regional.
