Dirtbags Win Final Midweek Game 3-1 Over Pepperdine
May 14, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - The Dirtbags jumped on Pepperdine early, scoring two runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 3-1 win over the Waves in Long Beach State's final Tuesday contest. Juan Avila had two hits, including an RBI double.
Long Beach State (25-25) got off to a quick start against Waves pitcher Eric Karch in the first inning. Colton Vaughn kicked off the action with a one-out single, and Avila followed with an RBI double to give the Dirtbags the lead. Zack Rivera then followed with a triple to left center, scoring Avila and giving the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
Pepperdine (24-24) cut back a run after a leadoff walk and an error in the fourth inning, but otherwise, Long Beach State pitcher Nick Sabo was very effective in his five innings, striking out five and giving up three hits, surrendering the lone unearned run in that inning as the sophomore collected his third win of the season.
The Dirtbags worked back to a two-run lead as Jeff Yamaguchi led off the inning after getting beaned. A stolen base and a sacrifice moved Yamaguchi into scoring position, and Jonathan Serven came through with an RBI single to stretch the LBSU lead to 3-1.
Ty Provencher worked two innings, giving up two hits, and Ryan Millison and Jon Maciel each pitched an inning with no hits. Maciel retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his eighth save of the season.
The Dirtbags return to Blair Field this weekend, closing out the home schedule by hosting UC Riverside for three games. The series will begin on Friday, with first pitch at 6 p.m.
