May 15, 2011
Fullerton, Calif. - Long Beach State troubles with Titans continued, as the Dirtbags lost the third and final game of the series at No. 9 Cal State Fullerton 6-1.
The Dirtbags were held to three hits by three Titan pitchers, with starter Colin O'Connell allowing one unearned run and three hits while striking out six over 7.2 innings pitched.
Junior Shawn Stuart pitched well in his second start of the week, moving through three scoreless innings before Cal State Fullerton (36-14, 17-4) scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Ramirez doubled with two outs, and after a bloop single by Carlos Lopez, Ramirez came home to score on a sacrifice fly.
The Titans added two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth with another two-out rally, as both runs that came home reached by way of Long Beach State errors. Another run was added in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Keegan Dale.
Long Beach State (24-25, 8-10) scored their first run in the seventh inning, capitalizing on more errors from CS Fullerton. Ino Patron reached on a two-base error from O'Connell, and on the next batter, an overthrow from Dale at shortstop allowed Patron to score and put Duffy on base for the Dirtbags.
The Titans added two more runs in the eighth inning to account for the final tally.
Long Beach State returns to Blair Field for its final four home games next week. The Dirtbags will host Pepperdine on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., before playing their final home Big West series against Cal State Northridge, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20.
