Dirtbags Drop Game Two at Minnesota, 12-6
LBSU allowed nine runs in the sixth inning of Saturday’s game, and matched its season high in runs allowed in the 12-6 loss.
MINNEAPOLIS - Big innings proved to be the Dirtbags’ undoing on Saturday afternoon at Siebert Field. Minnesota (30-16) scored three times in the third and nine times in the sixth to defeat Long Beach State (31-16-1) by a 12-6 margin and even the weekend series. The 12 runs matches the most runs allowed by the Dirtbags this season.
Lucas Tancas put the Dirtbags in the lead with a three-run home run in the third inning, his team-leading ninth homer of the season. Tancas turned on the first pitch he saw in the at bat and crushed it over the left field wall for a no-doubt home run, making it 3-0 Long Beach State.
Minnesota had an answer, however, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the third inning to tie the game.
The teams remained tied until the sixth inning when the Dirtbags took a 4-3 lead. Laine Huffman had a two-out RBI single up the middle to score David Banuelos and put LBSU back on top. That was part of a 4-for-4 day for Huffman, his second four-hit game of the season.
Things took a turn for the worse in the bottom half of the sixth, however, as Minnesota put up nine runs on seven hits to take a 12-4 lead. Luke Petterson had three RBIs in the inning for the Golden Gophers, who had five singles, two doubles and three walks in the inning.
LBSU had its first four batters reach in the top of the seventh to score twice, as Ramsey Romano had an RBI double and Daniel Jackson hit an RBI single. But the Dirtbags couldn’t quite work themselves back into the ballgame, stranding eight men on base and hitting into a pair of double plays. Freshman John Castro worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit while striking out a pair.
Sunday’s game will be a rubber match of the weekend series as RHP Dave Smith (6-1, 1.83 ERA) will be on the mound for the Dirtbags. The Minnesota starter is yet to be announced, and first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT.
