Stuart and Prigatano lead Dirtbags to 4-1 win at UC Davis
May 13, 2012
Davis, Calif. - Freshman Richard Prigatano was 3-for-4 with a solo home run while Senior Shawn Stuart allowed two hits and one unearned run over seven innings as Long Beach State took the final game of series at UC Davis 4-1.
Stuart continued to pitch like a conference pitcher of the year candidate, improving to 6-0 and lowering his ERA to 2.40 on the year over seven innings against UC Davis (20-27, 8-10) in a game that the Dirtbags (25-23, 12-6) needed to have.
The Dirtbags struck first, as Richard Prigatano singled to start the third inning, and after a Kellen Hoime single and a sacrifice, Matt Duffy lifted a sacrifice fly to give Long Beach State the lead.
UC Davis evened the score with a run in the bottom half, scoring without a hit. Brett Morgan was hit by a pitch, and scored on a passed ball following a stolen base and a groundout from the Aggies.
Long Beach State regained the lead in the fourth inning when Juan Avila came around to score following a double, and Prigatano gave the Dirtbags an insurance run with a solo home run to left field, the first of his career and the sixth on the season for Long Beach State.
Brennan Metzger scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning, leading off the inning with a single, stealing second, and scoring on an RBI single by Prigatano after a sacrifice.
Stuart, who pitched two more innings to get through the seventh, turned the ball over to Eddie Magallon, who struck out four in two innings of relief to collect his first save of the season.
The Dirtbags return to Blair Field for the rest of the season, hosting Pepperdine in the team's last non-conference game this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Long Beach State remains two games behind Cal State Fullerton in the Big West with six games to play. The Dirtbags host Pacific for three games next weekend before bringing in the Titans for a season-ending series May 25-27.
