HONOLULU – Long Beach State completed an island sweep of Hawaii with a 3-1 Sunday win over the Rainbow Warriors. The Dirtbags (26-23, 12-6 Big West) never trailed in the series and broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth inning to clinch the sweep.
Garrett Hampson broke the 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly down the right field line. Eric Hutting, who had walked to start the inning, came in to score ahead of the throw in from right. Colton Vaughn scored on a wild pitch moments for the insurance run.
Ryan Millison finished off the final three innings to get the win. He struck out three, walked one and gave up one hit in the three-inning effort out of the bullpen. The lone hit came in a key moment for Hawaii (19-28, 3-15 Big West). Adam Hurley doubled in Marc Flores, who drew a walk from Nick Sabo to start the inning.
Sabo was charged with the run and didn’t get the decision after a quality start on the mound. Sabo did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and allowed just two through his six-plus inning start. He fanned three and walked two as well and was charged with Hawaii’s lone run.
Hawaii had just three hits in the contest with Connor George lacing two singles.
Long Beach State heads back home for a Tuesday matchup with the University of San Diego at Blair Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
