Dirtbags Continue Win Streak By Defeating LMU 3-1
April 30, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - The seniors led the way for the Dirtbags on Tuesday, as Juan Avila led the team with three hits and Zach Miller added two while driving in a pair of RBI in a 3-1 win over Loyola Marymount Tuesday.
Long Beach State (21-21) took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second. Richard Prigatano walked to start the inning, and after a Colton Vaughn single, the pair executed a double steal, allowing both to score on a single from Miller, giving the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
Loyola Marymount (21-23) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, after LBSU starter Ryan Millison had retired the first nine in order. Zac Fujimoto singled to start the inning, and after a wild pitch, two groundouts brought around the Lions leadoff batter, making the score 2-1.
Another leadoff walk led to another run in the bottom of the sixth inning for Long Beach State. Jeff Yamaguchi worked a base on balls, and Avila followed with a single. Ino Patron moved both runners over with a sacrifice, an important move as the Dirtbags scored on a wild pitch, bringing home Yamaguchi.
Jon Maciel came on to pitch for Long Beach State in the top of the sixth inning, getting the last out of that frame, and then pitching three more innings, striking out six without allowing a hit and facing the minimum to earn his fifth save of the year.
With the win, the Dirtbags hit .500 for the first time since early March, and evened the season series with Loyola Marymount.
Long Beach State returns to Big West action this weekend, traveling to No. 4 Cal State Fullerton to face the rival Titans beginning on Friday, May 3.
