May 1, 2011
Long Beach, Calif. - Three Dirtbags had two hits and freshman Ryan Strufing earned his third win of the season as Long Beach State defeated Cal Poly 5-2 on Sunday. Strufing threw 5.2 innings and allowed one unearned run with four strikeouts.
Cal Poly took an early lead after an unearned run scored in the top of the second following a leadoff single by JJ Thompson, but the Dirtbags took the lead for good in the top of the third. Kirk Singer led off the inning with a single, and after a sacrifice, Matt Hibbert was plunked to put two runners on. Mike Marjama and Ino Patron then followed with back-to-back RBI singles as Long Beach State took a 2-1 lead.
The Dirtbags added two more in support of Strufing in the bottom of the fourth. Brennan Metzger led off the inning with a single, and after stealing second base, scored on Singer's second hit of the game. Singer then scored on a double from Matt Hibbert to put the Dirtbags in front 4-1.
Cal Poly added another unearned run in the seventh inning while the Dirtbags reopened a three-run cushion when Metzger drove in Marjama as both hitters collected their second single of the day in the bottom of the seventh.
Jon Maciel ended an eighth-inning rally with a double play and worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to collect his first save of the season.
Long Beach State now has five out of conference games scheduled before returning to Big West play. The Dirtbags travel to San Diego State on Tuesday before playing a three-game series at No. 8 Arizona State next weekend.
