No. 9 Dirtbags Fall to UCLA, 5-1

April 25, 2017

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 9 Long Beach State (25-14) was unable to sustain its offensive attack on Tuesday night at Blair Field, suffering a 5-1 loss to visiting UCLA (19-18). The Dirtbags took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Daniel Jackson’s solo home run, but that’s where the runs stopped for the Beach as UCLA defeated LBSU for the second straight Tuesday.

Dirtbags starter AJ Jones left the game in the second inning with injury, leading to eight different pitchers being used by Long Beach State in the game. Offensively, Joey Notch made his second start of the season behind the plate and was 2-for-2 with a double, a single, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt. DH Luke Rasmussen also had a pair of hits on the night.

In addition to the Jones injury, Lucas Tancas was hit in the face by a pitch in the seventh inning and was removed from the game. Unlike teammate Jarren Duran, who missed five games after being hit in the face on Mar. 26 vs. Cal State Fullerton, Tancas’ injury doesn’t appear to be serious and he is not expected to miss any games.

The Dirtbags and Bruins both stranded 12 runners on base, but the Bruins were able to capitalize on some defensive mistakes by Long Beach State, and also added a pair of two-out RBIs. Sean Bouchard also hit a solo home run to left center, his seventh of the season, to put UCLA up 3-1 in the third inning. The Bruins added two insurance runs in the seventh and Long Beach State was unable to threaten against the UCLA bullpen.

Next up is a trip to UC Davis for a Big West series this weekend. Game one is Friday at 2:30 p.m. with a pair of 1 p.m. contests on Saturday and Sunday.
