April 23, 2013
Los Angeles, Calif. - Long Beach State piled up 11 runs on eight hits, with four doubles and a three-run home run from Ino Patron as the Dirtbags picked up an impressive 11-1 win over UCLA on the road Tuesday.
Long Beach State (18-20) struck first in the top of the first inning, as Jeff McNeil walked to start the game, and came around to score on an RBI double by Michael Hill. Hill would then score after a sacrifice and an RBI groundout by Patron, giving the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Dirtbags broke the game open, batting around while seeing three pitchers in the inning. Bruins starter Cody Poteet got the first out of the inning, but an error by Trent Chatterton set the wheels in motion for a big inning. Poteet would walk the next two batters loading the bases for Zack Rivera, who cleared the bases with a double after Jake Ehret came on, making the score 5-0. Ehret then walked Eric Hutting, and Colton Vaughn singled to make the score 6-0 and put two runners in scoring position.
Jeff McNeil capped the inning with a double, scoring both Hutting and Vaughn to make the score 8-0 in favor of the Dirtbags over UCLA (25-12). Patron tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning with a three-run home run, his first of the season.
UCLA scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly from Brett Urabe, but never threatened a solid start from Nick Sabo, who pitched five scoreless innings to pick up his second career win.
Long Beach State returns home to Blair Field for three games next weekend, hosting No. 18 Cal Poly beginning on Friday, April 26.
