April 21, 2017

Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. - Reigning Big West Pitcher of the Year Darren McCaughan lived up to his reputation on Friday night at Anteater Ballpark, shutting out UC Irvine (14-21, 2-5 Big West) in a 4-0 Dirtbags win. Long Beach State (23-13, 8-2 Big West) recorded its eighth shutout win of the season, tying for the nation’s lead in that category with Oregon State and Louisiana-Lafayette.

McCaughan allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out five, and only one Anteater reached scoring position on the night. The junior has now thrown two consecutive complete games, giving him three on the season. It’s the first complete game shutout for a Dirtbags pitcher since May 14, 2016, when McCaughan shut out San Jose State at Blair Field.

Offensively, Ramsey Romano was 4-for-4 with all singles, setting a new career high in hits. Brock Lundquist was 3-for-4 on the evening with a walk, finishing just a home run shy of the cycle. Jarren Duran also had three hits and an RBI.

LBSU scored a run in the top of the second inning after Daniel Jackson led off with a walk. Romano then dropped a bunt single, with Jackson reaching third on a throwing error. Jackson would score the game’s first run on a double play ball to put the Dirtbags up 1-0.

The lead remained at 1-0 until the ninth, when Jackson drilled the first pitch of the inning deep over the left field wall. It was his first homer of the season, leading to his second run scored on the night. The Dirtbags added four singles in the inning, with RBIs from Laine Huffman and Duran, scoring Romano and Garrett Nelson.

LBSU will look to clinch the series on Saturday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark as RHP John Sheaks (5-1, 2.90 ERA) takes on RHP Chris Vargas (0-2, 5.13 ERA). First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
