Dirtbags Win Finale Against UCSB 8-4
April 21, 2013
Santa Barbara, Calif. - David Hill pitched five no-hit innings before giving up a run, which was more than enough to spot the freshman a six-run lead as Long Beach State won the series finale over UC Santa Barbara 8-4. Hill earned his third win of the season, while Michael Hill, Ino Patron and Juan Avila each added three hits for the Dirtbags.
Long Beach State (17-20, 7-5 Big West) opened up an early lead and never trailed in winning the final game of the series. Jeff McNeil started the day by scoring on an RBI by Patron, opening up a 1-0 lead, which was plenty for David Hill, who didn't allow a hit over his first five innings.
The Dirtbags broke the game open in the third inning. With one out, McNeil singled to put a runner on base, and Michael Hill increased his league lead in triples by hitting his fifth of the season. Jeff Yamaguchi was hit to put runners on the corners, and Patron drove in his second run of the day with a base hit. Avila kept the rally going with a two-run double, and then Richard Prigatano singled to drive in a fifth run on the inning, knocking out UC Santa Barbara (20-18, 6-6 Big West) starter Robby Nesovic. Reliever Dominic Mazza came on and ended the frame, but not before Long Beach State added one more run, taking a 7-0 lead.
Nesovic, staying in the game as the designated hitter, ended David Hill's no-no bid with a solo home run in the sixth inning, as UC Santa Barbara scored two runs in Hill's final inning of work, while adding two more in the seventh inning on a two-run home run from Brandon Trinkwon.
The Dirtbags had already added one more insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, however, and Ryan Millison closed out the final two innings without allowing a run to end the contest.
Long Beach State returns to action next Tuesday with a non-conference game against No. 11 UCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
