April 15, 2017

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - For the first time all season, No. 12 Long Beach State (22-12, 7-2 Big West) was unable to finish off a sweep at Blair Field. Visiting CSUN (17-20, 4-5 Big West) pounded out 15 hits for an 8-5 win in Saturday’s series finale, ending LBSU’s eight-game winning streak.

Senior Daniel Jackson had a pair of hits, two runs scored and an RBI and sophomore center fielder Garrett Nelson drove in two runs on two hits to lead the offensive effort. Starting pitcher Dave Smith pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and took a no decision. The Dirtbags bullpen five runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings as CSUN captured the win in a back-and-forth contest.

The Matadors took the lead with a run in the fourth, and LBSU immediately answered with a tally in the bottom half. Jarren Duran led off the inning with a hit by pitch, then stole second and took third on an errant throw. He would later score on an RBI fielder’s choice by Ramsey Romano to make it 1-1.

LBSU took the lead with a run in the fifth, then CSUN went ahead 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Again the Dirtbags had the answer, but this time with a two-out rally. Luke Rasmussen and Jackson hit consecutive two-out doubles to tie the score, then Nelson singled in Jackson to put the Dirtbags up 4-3.

CSUN took the lead for good with three runs in the seventh, including a two-run home run from Albee Weiss. The Matadors tacked on two more runs in the eighth on a two-run double from Weiss, who had four RBIs on the day. All of CSUN’s runs were scored with two outs and the 15 hits allowed were a season-high for LBSU’s pitchers.

The Dirtbags will hit the road next week, starting with a Tuesday matchup at UCLA at 6 p.m. LBSU will then get back to Big West action with a weekend series at UC Irvine.
