Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. - Brennan Metzger and Richard Prigatano each had a pair of RBI as the Dirtbags scored four earned runs against the conference's ERA leader, Andrew Vazquez, on the way to a 6-3 win in the first of two games Saturday against UC Santa Barbara.

Long Beach State (14-17, 5-2) put up six runs on nine hits to rally from a 2-0 deficit in the first of three games with the Gauchos (17-15, 4-3). Vazquez was excellent early, picking up eight outs before giving up a hit, as UCSB opened up an early lead. Brandon Trinkwon singled in the third inning, and came home to score on a double from Ryan Palermo. The Gauchos then added one more after Matt Anderson walked the first two batters of the fourth.

Anderson held on to only let one run in in that frame, and went six innings without great control, walking five, but gave the Dirtbags a chance to win and the offense finally picked him up in the bottom of the sixth. Jeff McNeil and Ino Patron led off the inning with back-to-back hits, and the Juan Avila walked to load the bases for Long Beach State.

Metzger then came up with the first RBI of the game for the Dirtbags on a fly ball to deep center field, and then with runners on the corners, Prigatano singled to bring home one more for the Dirtbags. Freshman Josh Guerra then singled to right, and in a gamble, rounded first hard with no one covering the base. Drawing a throw, Prigatano scored from first on the gambit, and Guerra reached second to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Dirtbags.

Prigtano and Metzger struck again with one more RBI each to give the Dirtbags a 6-2 lead after the seventh inning, and Kyle Friedrichs held off the Gauchos in the ninth with a 6-3 lead to collect his fourth save of the season.
