Dirtbags Rally For 4-3 Win In Extra Innings Over San Diego State
April 9, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, Jeff McNeil started the inning with a double, his third hit of the day, and Long Beach State scored three runs to tie Tuesday's game with San Diego State. The Dirtbags then finished off the comeback in the 11th inning, as Ino Patron's triple set the stage for a literal walk off 4-3 victory.
Facing Tyler Sapp, Patron tripled down the right field line to start the 11th inning, and the Aztecs elected to walk both Juan Avila and Richard Prigatano to load the bases. Josh Guerra then worked a full count, and drew a walk of the unintentional variety to send Long Beach State (13-18) home victorious.
That came on the heels of a tremendous comeback in the ninth inning. Down 3-0 after the Aztecs added one additional run in the top of the ninth, McNeil doubled off of starter Robards to start the inning, just the fourth hit of the day off of the San Diego State (17-16) pitcher, who had a great outing. Michael Hill followed with a base hit and Jeff Yamaguchi was hit to load the bases.
Patron lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home one run, and then Avila and Prigtano followed with RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3 before San Diego State closer Bubba Derby picked up the final out of the inning.
Robards went pitched eight full innings for San Diego State, allowing just three hits over the first eight innings before McNeil started off the ninth inning comeback. Long Beach State used the whole staff, with seven pitchers seeing action Tuesday. Ty Provencher struck out the side in the top of the 11th inning, collecting his first collegiate win.
The Dirtbags return to Blair Field this weekend, hosting UC Davis in a Big West series beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
