Long Beach, Calif. - The style of baseball that's been associated with the Dirtbags returned Sunday, as Long Beach State scrapped their way to three runs in support of Shawn Stuart and Ryan Strufing in a 3-1 victory.
Stuart took a no decision after throwing six innings against the Aggies, allowing one run and six hits, while the Dirtbags got 10 hits off of UC Davis starter Dayne Quist, eventually tallying three runs.
For the third day in a row, it was the Dirtbags getting on board in the first inning. Brennan Metzger led off the game with a double, and after getting pushed to third by Jeff McNeil, an RBI groundout brought the leadoff batter in for a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies tied the game in the third inning in a similar manner. Karl Kobler hit a leadoff double, and after a single by Ryan Allgrove, a sacrifice fly by Seth Batty evened the score at 1-1.
That would hold through the stretch when the Dirtbags got back on the board. Shortstop Kirk Singer lifted a double over the head of Batty in left, and came around to score when a bunt from Murai was mishandled in a rushed attempt to catch the freshman before he reached base.
The Dirtbags added an insurance run in the eighth inning, as Patron scored on an RBI single by Jonathan Kim following a leadoff double off of Quist.
Strufing, who had entered in the top of the seventh, ran into some trouble in the top of the eighth, turned the ball over to Eddie Magallon. The sophomore closer completed a five-out save, his eighth of the season, leading the Big West.
Long Beach State will play UCLA on the road on Tuesday, April 12, before returning to Blair Field for a three-game series with UC Riverside beginning on Friday, April 15.
