Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Darren McCaughan delivered his best start of the season as Long Beach State (18-11, 3-1 Big West) cruised past UC Riverside (12-13, 1-3 Big West) by an 8-0 margin on Friday night at Blair Field. The reigning Big West Pitcher of the Year tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out a career-best 13 batters.

The Dirtbags gave him immediate run support with a three-run first inning. Long Beach State had five hits in the first frame, including an RBI single from Luke Rasmussen to open the scoring. Ramsey Romano then delivered a well-placed two-run single through the right side, starting his career best five-RBI day at the plate.

LBSU went up 4-0 in the second on Laine Huffman’s first career home run. The junior shortstop led off the inning with a solo shot off the banner above the left field wall, continuing his solid performance at the plate. With two more hits on Friday, Huffman is now 5-for-7 with two runs and three RBIs in his last two contests. Rasmussen, Romano and Lucas Tancas also had two-hit games for the Dirtbags.

The Dirtbags added three more runs in the fifth as a fly ball double to center field cleared the bases to give Romano three more RBIs. Long Beach State handed UCR starter Alex Fagalde (5-1) his first loss of the season, tagging him for nine hits and seven earned runs in 5.0 innings pitched.

Freshman Zak Baayoun pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to close out the victory, giving LBSU its fourth straight win. The Dirtbags are now 10-1 at home this season. Friday was also Sandlot Night at Blair Field, and special guests Victor DiMattia and Marty York (the actors who played Timmy Timmons and Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan in the movie) were on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

LBSU will look to clinch the series on Saturday as RHP John Sheaks (3-1, 3.79 ERA) will face off against LHP Hazahel Quijada for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Blair Field.
