Long Beach State Evens Series With 6-2 Win Over Pacific
April 6, 2013
Stockton, Calif. - Junior Colby Brenner finished with a pair of doubles and three hits overall as Long Beach State scored three runs early and three runs late in support of Jake Stassi, beating Pacific 6-2. The junior starting pitcher set a season high with 7.2 innings pitched against the Tigers.
Pacific (8-17, 1-4 Big West) struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. After a Tyler Sullivan double, Erik Lockwood reached on an error, and two straight fielder's choices led to a pair of runs for the Tigers in the first inning.
Long Beach State (12-17, 3-2 Big West) answered right back in the top of the second inning. Jeff Yamaguchi started the inning with a triple, then scoring on an infield single from Richard Prigatano. A perfect hit-and-run from Eric Hutting put runners on the corners and a double from Brenner, the first of two on the day, tied the game a two. A sacrifice fly by Jeff McNeil added one more run as the Dirtbags took the lead 3-2.
From there, Stassi was in command, throwing 6.2 additional innings, all scoreless over the Tigers. The junior was helped by a pair of 5-4-3 double plays behind him, but worked to match Michael Benson, Pacific's starting pitcher who went eight innings, allowing just the three runs that came in the second inning.
In the ninth, Prigatano started off the frame with a single and advanced to second on an error as the first batter against reliever Nick Viola. After a sacrifice, Hutting, Brenner and McNeil hit three straight doubles to bring home three runs, opening up a 6-2 lead for the Dirtbags.
Jon Maciel, who came in to make the last out of the eighth inning, finished off the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
Long Beach State and Pacific finish their series Sunday at 1 p.m. Freshman David Hill will take the mound for the Dirtbags.
