Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Long Beach State (16-11, 2-1 Big West) took care of business on Sunday afternoon, claiming a 5-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara (11-14, 1-2 Big West) to win the opening series of Big West play. Brock Lundquist and Ramsey Romano each had a pair of RBIs on the day, helping LBSU starter Dave Smith to his second straight win on the mound.

Smith went 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Josh Advocate finished off the game with three strikeouts in two innings while allowing an unearned run.

LBSU took the lead in the fifth inning by putting three runs on the board. Brooks Stotler reached second base on a UCSB error to lead off the inning, then after a Laine Huffman walk, Matt Gimenez sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Lundquist then ripped his second hit of the day off the glove of Gauchos first baseman Austin Bush, bringing in both runners. Luke Rasmussen then doubled home Lundquist after he stole his second base of the afternoon to make it 3-0 Dirtbags.

UCSB pulled a run back with three singles and a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning, but the Dirtbags would add two more insurance runs in the eighth. Daniel Jackson led off the inning with a single then moved to second when Lucas Tancas walked with one out. Both runners stole bases on separate pitches, setting up Romano for a two-out, two-run single through the left side.

Lundquist recorded six RBIs out of the leadoff spot in the series, extending his hitting streak to six games. David Banuelos hit a first-inning single to record a hit in five consecutive at bats going back to yesterday’s game.

The Dirtbags will begin an seven-game homestand on Tuesday when they host USC at Blair Field. First pitch against the Trojans is scheduled for 6 p.m.
