Dirtbags Pull Away For 9-3 Win at UCSB
LBSU scored in each of the last five innings to earn a series-evening win in Santa Barbara on Saturday.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A late offensive surge from Long Beach State led the Dirtbags to a comfortable 9-3 win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon. LBSU scored in each of the last five innings to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 9-1 lead. David Banuelos had four hits, Brock Lundquist had three RBIs and John Sheaks struck out seven batters in his six innings of work to lead Long Beach State to a series-evening victory.
Sheaks delivered his second straight quality start, matching his career high with those seven punchouts. He scattered six hits while allowing one run and walking a pair, earning his third victory of the season. Eli Villalobos pitched the final three innings to earn his first career save, striking out three and surrendering two solo home runs in the ninth inning while pitching with a big lead.
Banuelos matched his career high with four hits, smacking three singles and a double with two runs scored and another batted in. Banuelos also had four hits at Arizona State earlier this year. Brock Lundquist recorded 3 RBIs for the first time this season to match his career high. Batting out of the leadoff spot again, Lundquist had a game-tying RBI single in the fifth and a two-run triple in the eighth inning.
Trailing 1-0 after four innings, the Dirtbags offense got going in the fifth as Banuelos singled to lead it off and was joined on base by Matt Gimenez, who walked. Lundquist’s RBI single tied the game, then an error by UCSB second baseman Colton Burns with two outs and the bases loaded allowed two more runs to come across, giving LBSU a 3-1 lead.
Banuelos hit an RBI double to tack on a run in the sixth, then Luke Rasmussen led off the seventh inning with a double and later scored on an RBI grounder from Daniel Jackson. Lunduist’s triple added two more runs in the eighth, then Lucas Tancas led off the ninth inning with his third home run of the season. LBSU loaded the bases in the ninth, and a sacrifice fly from Gimenez provided the final tally of the day.
LBSU will look to win the series on Sunday as RHP Dave Smith (1-1, 0.63 ERA) will face off with RHP Chris Clements (1-3, 6.38 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
