Box Score

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Senior Shawn Stuart threw Long Beach State's eighth one-hitter in a complete game shutout, striking out nine as the Dirtbags defeated Cal Poly 4-0 to win the series on the road in San Luis Obispo.

Stuart, in his first start since Friday, March 16, was outstanding, giving up just one hit over nine innings, marking his first complete game and as well as Long Beach State's first shutout of the season. Stuart's nine strikeouts also marked a season high for the senior out of Turlock.

Long Beach State struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Johnny Bekakis led off the game with a base hit, and Ino Patron followed with another single and Juan Avila was hit to load the bases. Bekakis then scored on a passed ball, and Patron came home on a sacrifice fly from Metzger.

The Dirtbags added two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth, all with two outs. Matt Duffy extended the inning with a single, and Patron walked to put two runners on. Avila and Metzger then hit back-to-back RBI singles to give Long Beach State a 4-0 lead. Metzger finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while every hitter in the lineup for Long Beach State came away with a hit.

Stuart walked one batter and hit one as well. His only hit allowed came in the fifth inning, as David Armendariz tripled to right-center with one out, but Stuart induced two straight groundouts to get out of the inning with the Mustangs still scoreless.

Stuart's one-hitter was the eighth one-hitter in school history, and is the first to throw a complete game one-hitter since Andrew Carpenter in 2006. Stuart's gem was the first complete game for a Long Beach State hurler since 2011, and the first complete game shutout since April of 2010.

Long Beach State continues Big West play next weekend with another road series. The Dirtbags travel to UC Riverside for a three-game set beginning on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as the Big West schedule works around the Easter holiday.
